Real Choices for Women |
|
One in three Australian women will have an abortion in her lifetime - an abortion that is presented as a safe, simple solution. But rather than a solution, abortion is the problem: it destroys human life and carries significant physical, psychological and emotional risks for women. Abortion perpetuates the structural factors that work against genuine choice: financial and relationship pressures, social disadvantage, domestic violence, unsupportive work places. WFA believes that no woman should ever have to choose between her own welfare and that of her unborn child. Their focus is on social policy initiatives that offer women genuine choices and restore their freedom to be mothers. WFA affirms that women who have had, or are contemplating abortion, require understanding and support, never judgement. WFA has published a literature review of women’s motivations for seeking abortion and the impact of abortion on their lives: Women and Abortion: an evidence-based review. WFA has also held several Real Choices forums around the country, bringing together high-profile speakers and large numbers of women who believe that women deserve better than abortion. RU486 was an issue about which WFA was also concerned, believing that Australian women needed real choices rather than a new abortion drug with little accountability and independent scrutiny. |
